Where you are arrested determines who prosecutes the case, which judges hear it, how quickly you can get a bond hearing, what diversion programs are realistically available, and how aggressively common offenses (DWI, family violence, possession, theft) are charged. Collin County overview →The largest county we serve. Felonies are prosecuted in 17 Criminal District Courts at the Crowley building; misdemeanors are handled in 11 County Criminal Courts. The Dallas DA has historically run pretrial-diversion programs (DIVERT, FAIP, Veterans), and the office has a dedicated Conviction Integrity Unit. Dallas County overview →Denton County splits its felony docket among the 16th, 158th, 211th, 367th, 393rd, 431st, and 442nd Judicial District Courts, with six County Criminal Courts hearing misdemeanors. The DA office has a long-running first-offender diversion program and an active DWI/blood-warrant team. I-35E from Carrollton north through Lewisville drives a high volume of DWI stops.
Denton County overview →Tarrant’s ten Criminal District Courts and ten County Criminal Courts run a high-volume felony and misdemeanor docket out of Fort Worth. The DA office is known for a structured plea process, mandatory blood draws on DWI second-offense and up, and an aggressive family-violence prosecution unit. Arlington school-zone enhancements and DFW-airport jurisdiction cases come up regularly.
Tarrant County overview →A small but fast-growing county on the east side of Lake Ray Hubbard. Felonies run through the 382nd and 439th Judicial District Courts; misdemeanors through County Court at Law No. 1 and 2. Because the docket is leaner than Collin or Dallas, pretrial timelines move faster and informal pretrial conferences are common.

People often assume a Texas criminal case is a Texas criminal case — that the Penal Code is the same statewide, so it should not matter where you are charged. The statute is the same, but the experience of defending a case can be very different across the nine counties on this page. Understanding the differences helps you make better decisions early on.
Each county publishes a misdemeanor and felony bond schedule that magistrates use at first appearance. The amounts vary considerably — a Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana with a clean record may sit at $1,000 in one county and $2,500 in another. Conditions of bond (no-contact orders in family-violence cases, ignition-interlock orders in DWI cases, drug-testing for possession) also vary by county and by magistrate. Bond-reduction motions are governed by Article 17.15 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, but each county’s court schedules and informal customs shape how quickly they are heard. We file bond-reduction motions in all nine counties on this page and have working knowledge of each magistrate’s docket.
Most DFW counties run some form of pretrial diversion, but each program has different eligibility, length, fee structure, and conditions for dismissal. Collin County’s diversion screening looks heavily at the offense level, prior record, and victim impact. Dallas County’s DIVERT and FAIP programs (for DWI and first-offender misdemeanors respectively) are structured but competitive. Denton, Tarrant, Rockwall, Kaufman, Ellis, Johnson, and Hunt each have their own first-offender programs with their own paperwork and informal customs. We evaluate diversion eligibility county-by-county; the same case can be a diversion candidate in one county and a straight plea negotiation in another.
Texas DWI law is statewide (Texas Penal Code §§ 49.04–49.09 and Texas Transportation Code Chapter 524), but how the case is investigated and prosecuted is county-specific. Some counties (Tarrant, Denton, Collin) routinely obtain blood-draw warrants for felony DWI and refusal cases; the Dallas County DA office is known for charging-decision discipline around blood-evidence chain of custody. The Administrative License Revocation (ALR) hearing under Transportation Code Chapter 524 is a separate civil proceeding that runs in parallel to the criminal case and is heard by SOAH administrative law judges; ALR practice is uniform across the state but the surrounding criminal customs are not.
Eligibility for an Article 55 expunction or a Chapter 411 (Subchapter E-1) non-disclosure order is set by state statute, but the petitions are filed in the county where the case originated and served on every state agency that holds a record. We file expunctions and non-disclosures in all nine counties on this page. Wait periods, agency fees, and clerk customs vary by county; the Collin County Clerk’s expunction docket runs differently from Dallas County’s.

Federal criminal cases (wire and mail fraud, federal drug conspiracies, child pornography, firearms in furtherance, federal tax, immigration, and bank fraud) are charged by the United States Attorney’s Office and heard in the U.S. District Courts. North Texas is split between two districts. Reggie and Njeri London are admitted to both, plus the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit for federal appellate work.
Felony cases originating in Collin, Dallas, Denton, Tarrant, Rockwall, Kaufman, Ellis, Johnson, and Hunt counties are charged in TXND. The Dallas Division (1100 Commerce St, Dallas) and Plano-area filings are the most relevant to our clients.
