TL;DR

Quick Answer

Table of Contents
"Molly" is the slang term for pure MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine), distinguished from "ecstasy" which traditionally refers to pressed pills. Molly appears as powder or crystalline form, sometimes in clear capsules ("clear caps" or "M caps"). Color varies from white to brown depending on purity. Texas classifies MDMA as Penalty Group 2 (not 1A, despite some title references). The "pure molly" marketing claim is often false — many "molly" samples contain other substances entirely.

Visual appearance

Powder molly:

  • White, off-white, beige, brown
  • Crystalline or chunky texture
  • Can resemble cocaine or meth visually
  • Typically distributed in small zip baggies or capsules

Capsule molly:

  • Clear gelatin capsules ("M caps")
  • Filled with MDMA powder or crystals
  • Standard pharmaceutical-style capsules
  • Dosing nominally 75-150mg per capsule

Crystal molly:

  • Larger crystal structures
  • Brown or tan-colored
  • Higher purity claim (often false)
  • Sometimes called "champagne molly" or "brown molly"

The adulteration problem

"Pure molly" is largely marketing. Independent testing (DanceSafe and similar harm reduction organizations) has documented:

  • Many "molly" samples contain no MDMA
  • Common adulterants: methamphetamine, MDA, MDPV, methylone, eutylone, caffeine
  • Some samples are pure methamphetamine sold as molly
  • NBOMe compounds (4-MeO-PCP, etc.) sometimes substituted
  • Fentanyl contamination has appeared in recent years

Visual identification doesn't help — adulterated molly often looks identical to genuine MDMA. Test kits (Marquis reagent and others) help identify but aren't 100% reliable.

Texas Penalty Group 2 classification

MDMA is Penalty Group 2 under Texas Health & Safety Code §481.103 (not Penalty Group 1A as some sources incorrectly state). Possession penalties under §481.116:

  • Under 1g: State jail felony
  • 1-4g: 3rd degree felony
  • 4-400g: 2nd degree felony
  • 400g+: 1st degree felony

Same penalty group as THC concentrates, mushrooms, PCP. Different (more punitive) than Penalty Group 3 (Xanax, Adderall) but less than Penalty Group 1 (cocaine, heroin, meth).

Aggregate weight rule applies: capsule shell, pill binders, adulterants all count toward weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is molly the same as ecstasy?

Both refer to MDMA. "Molly" originally meant pure powder MDMA; "ecstasy" meant pressed pills. Distinction has blurred. Both are MDMA, both Penalty Group 2 in Texas. Pills typically contain MDMA + binders; powder/capsules nominally purer.

How do I know if molly is pure?

Test kits (Marquis reagent, Mecke, Simon) help identify MDMA but aren't 100% reliable. Independent lab testing (some harm reduction organizations) more reliable but harder to access. Pure MDMA produces specific color reactions; adulterated samples produce different colors.

Will molly show as MDMA or amphetamine on drug tests?

Both. MDMA produces both MDMA and amphetamine metabolites. Standard amphetamine immunoassays detect both. Confirmation testing distinguishes specific compounds.

What's the risk of fake molly?

Substantial. Adulterants can be more dangerous than MDMA itself. NBOMe compounds, MDPV, and other research chemicals sold as molly have caused deaths. Fentanyl contamination in recent years has produced overdoses.

Can pills be tested for actual content?

Yes, through reagent testing kits and lab testing. DanceSafe and similar organizations test pills at music festivals and events. Texas harm reduction organizations have expanded testing access.
